More than an Art Class

Arts integration is an approach to teaching and learning where content standards are taught with, in and through the arts.

Benefits to Students

An essential question core teachers ask themselves is "what do I want my students to know and be able to do?" Using an arts integrated approach, when appropriate, the teacher starts with core content standards and then incorporates an arts related curriculum.

Teachers often incorporate concept demonstration into their teaching strategy and repeat this over time in different subjects. In some instances, a students explore two standards deeply, for example, the development of characterization in literature alongside a study of rule-of-thirds in photography. Arts integrated techniques help students find relevance and connect their learning across disciplines.

Engagement Through Creativity

A curriculum which includes Arts Integration is highly engaging for students. Teachers emphasize critical-thinking skills, practice innovation, and increase grit with problem-solving. Students push themselves to think and create differently.
