Learning by Doing
We believe experience is one of life’s greatest teachers. Learning by doing is a process that pushes the mind and tests resilience. While this is most common in our Academic Arts Academy, it is a philosophy passed across the campus. For example, lessons learned in an arts course carry over to a history classroom to develop an enhanced understanding of an era’s culture.
Experience Where it Counts
Experience comes in many forms, and every student has unique experiences to offer. Skills-based courses, off-site learning and teachers’ own experiences are used in our process. Also, because of our geographic make up, the school offers diverse peer perspectives from various socio-economics, race, ethnicity and backgrounds.
Healthy Risks Rewarded
Healthy risks are different for each individual. Students work with teachers to understand their own boundaries: what is their comfort level, where do they feel challenged, etc. Students create realistic risks that work for them, not for others with different learning styles.
With their risks defined, students set expectations and keep themselves responsible. They plot their path to success and are inspired to repeat the process. The value of thinking outside the box and challenging themselves is part of the discovery.
Well-Rounded Thinkers
Experiential education develops the knowledge we expect. Then, we take it further in our studios, labs and workshops. Students invest in their work and understand their connection to outcomes. This experience goes beyond one assignment. It creates holistic thinkers who use creativity and curiosity throughout life.
